It’s probably obvious by now, but we heart the West Bottoms! From historical buildings and architecture to vintage shopping, trendy restaurants and an array of interesting people to meet and mingle, it’s a true gem of our city. No longer an insider secret, the West Bottoms and the booming First Weekends of the month are proving to be the place to be for hipsters, suburbanites and urban dwellers alike. For those interested in venturing to the area for the first time, or for those who have been but want to truly immerse in the eclectic culture, we have the guide for you! A list of what to do and see, places to shop and where to eat.
Let’s start with our favorite, the best places to SHOP:
We are headquartered out of Bella Patina because we truly love the vintage finds and cool vibe of the three-story shopping destination. From farmhouse chic to mid-century modern, this place has it all. Restocked every month with new pieces, you’ll never have a repeat shopping experience. Bonus features: it’s air conditioned (hallelujah during the summer months), it has a BAR manned by Embrace the Grape on the 3rd floor, and in addition to the vintage finds it houses some of Kansas City’s coolest artisan makers. Jewelry, clothing, handmade furniture and items for little ones are just a few of the gems you will find in their makers’ corner!
Easy Tiger is another great stop, stocked with quippy gift pieces of cool Kansas City finds. Grab a paper good souvenir, trendy home decor and kitchen pieces or a fun t-shirt. And on the way out take a pic with your crew outside by the vintage VW Bus, because it would make a fantastic Instagram post, obviously!
As one of the first places to open in the West Bottoms, Good JuJu is a great mix of hard to find antiques and retro goods. You are sure to always find something unique. Hello Sailor is eclectic, easy to shop, and really brings it, especially during the holiday seasons! From KC tees to quirky home decor, it is a fun stop on your West Bottoms adventure. Restoration Emporium is several floors of new and vintage finds. They are our go-to source for Amy Howard Chalk Paint, do a great job of staging decor so you can visualize it in your own home, and are headquarters to the BEST place to find the coolest of Kansas City wearables, Love Letters. Make sure to check out their selection, you will want one of everything! Varnish and Vine, the newest of stores to hit the area is packed with covetable and beautiful decor and furniture pieces. It is easy to shop and will have you lusting for something new for your home around every corner!
Where to Eat and Drink:
No longer a food desert, the West Bottoms has been bringing it the last few years with great restaurants and foodie stops. For a quick bite, roll up to one of the many food trucks found during the First Weekend events. They practically line the streets and cater everything from shaved ice to Philly cheese steaks and gyros. You won’t leave hungry or thirsty!
If you are wanting a place to sit and relax, head up Painted Rooster in Bella Patina. They serve a great Cuban sandwich, and is a family-owned and run restaurant that makes you feel like one of their own!
Once you cross to the other side of the bridge, the choices are again impressive! Amigoni Urban Winery is fantastic for quick wine tasting and small plate sampling. Stockyards Brewery should be your next stop, for a delicious beer flight. Obviously, you and your crew will need to soak up all of the alcohol you have consumed, so make sure to choose Rockstar Burgers (a 24/7 burger joint that is oh-so cool), Genessee Royal Bistro (for a more casual, laid-back experience) or Volatire for a fancier sit-down global feast.
What to make sure to see and do:
Of course, we can’t get through this post without mentioning our one-of-a-kind DIY workshops at The Makery KC. On the third floor of Bella Patina, we pride ourselves on making DIY easy and attainable for anyone and everyone. You won’t find your Grandma’s crafts here, instead we focus on modern, on-trend projects. As a bonus, there’s always a homemade, seasonally appropriate small bite and wine pairing, because who wants to make a project without wine? No one. So grab some girlfriends, and make us one of your stops on your West Bottoms tour!
After your quick stop of making and shopping, you will then want to head out to the bustling streets where you will see bands at every corner playing dance-inducing music. Make sure to take in the eclectic culture and multitudes of different people as this is what makes the area innately unique.
There’s nothing like a beautiful weekend to get you in the mood for leisurely taking in the sights of our great city. Plan your next family day, grab some girlfriends for a day of shopping, making and sipping, or plan a date night with your spouse. The West Bottoms caters to all!
See you next First Weekend.
